Heads Down, Vocab up!
- Synopsis: Have you ever played 7-up? Well Heads Down, Vocab up! is the education version. Students get to experience the fun of the traditional game 7-up with a spin that enhances word knowledge by focusing on the students’ vocabulary words. By combining the two, the students are more than eager to learn their vocabulary words and definitions.
- Materials: Students, index cards with definitions on them, and index cards with the vocabulary words on them.
- Directions: Pick three to four students to be it. Give each student picked a vocabulary card and definition card (chosen students do NOT need to have matching term and definition, mix them up!). Turn off the lights and have the rest of the class put their heads down (NO PEEKING!) and their thumbs up. The chosen students will go around the room, pick someone by touching their thumb, and placing the definition card on his/her desk. When the teacher turns the lights on, those picked will stand up and match definition card to the correct vocabulary card. If they get it right, they get to trade places and be it. If they get it wrong, they sit back down; then the next round begins. The goal is for every student to do a definition and vocabulary card at least once.
Vocabulary Trading Cards
- Synopsis: Students love trading card games and are starting to create their own trading cards. Vocabulary trading cards practices vocabulary skills by having students draw a picture for each vocabulary word along with adding “stats” of the word on the back (i.e. part of speech, definition, sentence, synonym, and antonym).
- Materials: Blank trading cards, vocabulary list with definitions, writing utensil, and crayons/colored pencil.
- Directions: On the front of the card, students write the vocabulary word and draw a corresponding picture. On the back they write the following word “stats:” definition, sentence, synonym, and antonym. Once cards are made, students can do the following activities: placing the cards out on their desk then completing a writing prompt using all the words and project a picture of the word on the board and have the students determine the definition based on the projected picture and their drawings.
